We are living in a planet surrounded by various chemical, herbal and animal allergic materials. Air pollution has changed our living environment drastically. All these factors can affect our immune system. Before discussing the topic we define some key terms: A. Allergen: It is a substance which stimulates one’s immune system after passing through skin, air passages, and intestinal epithelium. For example, common household chemicals such as automatic dishwashing detergents, chlorinated disinfectants and cleaners primarily touch one’s moist skin, enter the body through skin or air ways and stimulate the immune system. B. Antibody: Once a substance is recognized as an allergen, antibody is secreted by certain cells to fight against the new enemy which is threatening its security and health. C. Allergic symptoms: The fight between allergen and antibody leads to producing certain signs like sneezing, coryza, urticaria, dyspnea and asthma. These are valuable signs and alarms which help us get rid of the killing allergen. D. Suppression: Using different medicinal substances to put an end to the symptoms, forcibly by any kind of medicine. - How to cure or palliate allergic patients: 1. Conventional way of helping the allergic conditions: Medical students are trained to use anti-allergic agents to control and manage the patients’ bothering and sometimes life threatening conditions. Oral agents are prescribed primarily. However, the second reaction is usually the return of the symptoms, worse than before. - What must physician do next? He has to prescribe non-steroidal anti-allergic ampoules, instead of oral agents. Again, the poor patient feels better for a while but as soon as he encounters certain allergen, he faces repeated sneezing, coryza, urticaria and dyspnea which may kill the patient if not treated and suppressed rapidly. Asthmatic attack is a very good example of such bothersome and life threatening condition. - What is the next and last step? - Steroidal anti-allergic drugs; Human body secrets steroidal hormones by adrenal glands, to regulate internal balance. If certain amounts of medicinal steroidal hormones are prescribed and taken by patients the hormonal balance is disturbed and patients experience related unwanted effects and in long term the glands are suppressed to the point of being stricken by a health condition called Cushing’s syndrome. Cushing’s syndrome is a disorder that occurs when one’s body is exposed to high levels of the hormone cortisol. It may also occur if one takes too much cortisol or other steroid hormones. 2. Homeopathic method of curing or palliating allergic patients As you know homeopathy is a holistic method of healing. It considers man as a whole creature being created of spirit, mind, emotions and body. One can not be separated to different, unrelated parts. It must be considered as a whole, i.e. the holistic view. In chronic cases such as allergic conditions, a thorough case taking is done, the symptoms are derived and converted to homeopathic rubrics, then homeopathic software like Radar analyses the rubrics and proper remedy is selected by homeopath. The remedy is prescribed in suitable potency and dose; the patient takes the remedy afterwards and writes and reports the changes he experiences to homeopath during the first 2 weeks. Homeopathic remedies show the patients their effects from 2 minutes to 2 weeks. A prominent principle in homeopathy says the most similar and proper remedy must act gently, rapidly and permanently. - How remedies work? They stimulate immune system, neuro hormonal axis, and related defense mechanism to enhance one’s self-healing power. I have experienced several allergic cases who have responded very well to homeopathic remedies. - Case no.1: A young married woman was complaining of chronic seasonal hay fever. After taking her case and doing the other procedures Allium cepa with potency of 30c was prescribed for her and taken afterwards. She reported feeling better and less attacks of sneezing and coryza, but not completely. In the next step her constitutional remedy which had come out to be Phosphorus was prescribed and taken by the patient. Her immune system, which had been stimulated to act better, experienced another remedy called phosphorus. Now the allergic constitution has improved to the point that she almost does not need conventional medicines. - Case no.2: A young man aged 27 suffered from weak concentration, laziness in studying books and allergies to watermelon, melon and grapes. A thorough case taking was done and Nux-vomica or Nux-v. was prescribed for him. He felt an inner calmness and an overall improvement but still suffered from food allergies. The next remedy was found out to be Natrium muraticum or Nat-m. After taking repeated small doses of the remedy with potency of 30c the patient was visited again. He had no complaint of his almost life-long allergy to the fruits mentioned above, except that he is still afraid of eating watermelon too much. - A 6-year, university-hospital outpatient observational study, published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, finds: A very interesting study was done by David S. Spence, Elizabeth A. Thompson and S.J. Barron in 6,544 patients with chronic conditions including various allergies with the following results and conclusions: A total of 6,544 consecutive follow-up patients were given outcome scores. Of the patients 70.7% (n = 4,627) reported positive health changes, with 50.7% (n = 3318) recording their improvement as better (+2) or much better (+3). Homeopathic intervention offered positive health changes to a substantial proportion of a large cohort of patients with a wide range of chronic diseases. Additional observational research, including studies using different designs, is necessary for further research development in homeopathy. Conclusions: In order to obtain gentle, rapid and permanent cure and improvement homeopathic method of healing chronic diseases is suggested to be taken in considerable account in order to: - Stimulate one’s immune system to enhance self healing power. - Prevent to suppress patients’ signs with chronic conditions like allergic disorders by conventional drugs.
