Camel riding around one the oldest cities of Iran could be interesting for many people. You can travel to different historical periods of Iran while riding a camel.

There are many different historical monuments in this old city. For example Deyr-e Gachin caravansary is one of these old famous monuments which belong to Sassanid era. In that time it was a Zoroastrian temple and in Safavid period (1501-1736) it changed to a caravansary.

There are forty three chambers, porches, Sumerian veranda, eight stables to keep the camels and a mosque in this old building. The caravansary is located in 70 kilometers south of Tehran – somewhere near Rey and Varamin.

There are many tours for visiting the attractive historical monuments and recreational resorts of Rey. In this tour you can enjoy camel riding too.

Zoroastrian temple
The Zoroastrian temple as one of the most important old temples of pre -Islamic period of Iran’s history, is located in Rey. Iranian historian Mohammad ibn Jarir Tabari narrates it is the first temple of Zoroastrians.

This temple is one of the historical monuments of Sassanid era, which the great part of it was destroyed in Alexander invasion to Iran. It has been built by stone and mud brick.
In this building there are four hallways to keep fire far from the wind and water. As historians believe ancient Iranians did respect fire a lot and they built temples in the important cities to lighten fire constantly.

Toghrol Tower

altDo you know where the oldest tower of capital is? Toqrol tower is located in Rey, south part of the Tehran, but it seems lost in trees and houses of Rey streets. The architectural structure was constructed under the reign of Seljuks at the order of Toghrol in 1140, once he transferred the capital city from Neyshabour to Ray.
The tower is 20 meters high and the surface of its exterior is divided into 24 sections, which besides manifesting beauty and durability, symbolizes the figures of constellation as well as a 24-hour length of time (a day and a night).

Bibi Shahr Banoo Shrine

altThere is also a shrine there, dedicated to commemorate Princess Shahr Banoo, eldest daughter of the last ruler of the Sassanid Empire.
She gave birth to Ali Zayn al Abidin (AS), the fourth holy Imam of the Shia faith, through her marriage to
Hossein ibn Ali (AS), the third Shia Imam.

Her tomb is located on top a hill in south eastern part of Tehran in Rey. There are many young and old people who are the pilgrims this shrine every day.

By entering this monument a cave attracts visitors’ attention, which it was a Zoroastrian cemetery, in far old days. Pilgrims have small stones tied up in green strings in their hands to put them in tomb wall in order to satisfy their desires. Even some Arabs come to visit this shrine.

Cheshmeh Ali archaeological site

altIt was a spring called suren in old days in Rey that after Islamic period the name was changed to Ali. People believe that, the spring water can relieve pains.
In 1933-6 Cheshmeh Ali hill was excavated by archaeologists from the Boston Fine Arts Museum and the University Museum at the University of Pennsylvania, which resulted in the discovery of 7000-yearold artifacts.

Since Ray was a recreation resort due to its beautiful attractions under the reign of the Qajar dynasty, Fath
Ali Shah often used to explore the city. In 1831 his portrait and that of some Qajar princes were engraved on a rock at Cheshmeh Ali hill and its surrounding was decorated with tablets covered by poetry.
There are some other stone carvings on the top of this spring from Fath Ali Shah Qajar period, which shows people washing their carpets. And still there are some people who take their carpets there to wash and many others come to visit.
