Haghshenas: A lasting linguistic figure

Dr. Ali Muhammad Haghshenas was a talented Iranian linguist, translator, lexicographer and literary critic who authored and translated a number of helpful books including a bilingual English to Persian dictionary entitled “Hezareh” (Millennium) which is regarded as the best work of its kind in the country.
His efforts to author the dictionary also brought him Iran’s 20th Book of the Year Award. Moreover, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) also highly praised him as a lasting linguistic figure for two times.
altBorn 1940 in Jahrom in Fars Province, he received a bachelor’s degree in Persian literature.
Haghshenas left for England where he taught Persian literature and managed to attain his PhD in linguistics and phonetics from School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).
The homesick academic graduate returned to his motherland in 1973. Soon he started his carrier as a professor of linguistics at the University of Tehran and the then Melli University (named Shahid Beheshti, after the 1979 Islamic Revolution).
The energetic professor contributed several influential works to the community of linguists both in Iran and abroad and some of his literary works earned him several national Iranian book awards.
He had published many articles in linguistics in some national and international language journals. The following is a list of some of his works:
Phonemics; Dialectic Overturn; The Buda (Persian translation); A Brief History of Linguistics; Tolstoy; Language; and Hezareh English to Persian Dictionary.
He passed away on April 30, 2010 at the age of seventy. A grand memorial ceremony was held before his body was laid to rest in Kelardasht, a region in northern Iran famous for an amazing natural beauty.
Haghshenas is always remembered by Iranian community of linguists and literary critics for his valuable works and admirable perseverance.
