TEHRAN -- Several Iranian musical instruments, which have been forgotten over time, have been recently donated to the Music Museum of Iran. The instruments have been remade by Iranian oud virtuoso Majid Nazempur, the Persian service of the Mehr News Agency reported on Sunday. “In addition to performing oud, remaking the forgotten Iranian musical instruments is one of my interests in the field of music,” Nazempur said. “In my view, the Music Museum of Iran is the best venue for preserving the instruments. The museum gives an opportunity for music fans to learn about the instruments,” he added. The donated instruments include a chang (harp), which originally dates back to the Sassanid era, some kinds of ouds and six sets of naqareh, a Persian percussion instrument. Nazempur has also made an effort to recompose musical pieces that were performed on these instruments in Iran about a thousand years ago. “I would like to premiere these compositions in a way that would be very close to the music as performed a thousand years ago,” he once said. Nazempur authored “5000-Year-Old History of the Oud” in three volumes, which are scheduled to be published by the Iranian Academy of Arts. The book shows that oud has its origins in Persia. It also introduces outstanding performers of the instruments. Studies of the documents derived from archaeological findings in the regions of Babylonia, Assyria and neighboring areas indicate that the chang, in its various forms, had been used from about the eighth century BC. It was a popular instrument during the Sassanid era. There are frequent references to the chang in Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, and the court musician of the Sassanid King Khosrow Parviz (reigned 590–628) Nakisa was an expert on this instrument. Iran’s historical musical instruments can be found depicted in old miniature paintings and bas-reliefs, and they have also been discussed in ancient texts and divans. MMS/YAW END
