Ahmadinejad urges ABU to focus on Oriental civilization
Tehran Times Political Desk

TEHRAN -- President Mahmud Ahmadinejad here on Saturday urged Eastern media to focus their activities on demonstrating the prominent characteristics of the Oriental civilization.

In a speech to the opening ceremony of the 44th general assembly of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) the president insisted that friendship, justice, peace, and salvation form the key components of the Oriental culture and civilization.

Ahmadinejad said that bullying powers use media as a tool to humiliate other nations and cultures and direct international relations into their own favor through a distortion of reality.

“Their (media) influence has grown so much that they introduce the worst criminals as the men of peace and introduce the most-oppressed and peace-loving persons as warmongering individuals,” he explained.

He noted that these powers use media to make people continuously experience a transient excitement, so that they cannon find an opportunity to think of their national and spiritual wealth.

""They humiliate our nations continuously in order to smash our people's self-confidence and make them disappointed of their historical background.""

These bullying powers seek to portray an integrated picture of themselves, while they try to “sow seeds of discord” and magnify existing differences among neighbor countries and even among people who belong to different ethnicities but live in the form of one nation, he added.

Elsewhere, the Iranian president assessed the airing of information as a vital need of every society and called on the Asian media to provide accurate and proper information for their viewers.

He also regretted the fact that global powers misuse media to fabricate historical, scientific, industrial, moral, philosophical, ideological, and political facts and events through a selective and manipulative release of information.

The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) is a non-profit, non-government, professional association of broadcasting organizations, formed in 1964 to facilitate the development of broadcasting in the Asia-Pacific region and to organize cooperative activities amongst its members.

The ABU is the third largest of the world's eight broadcasting unions, but covers the largest geographic area of the world
