Interior Minister Kordan will face impeachment on Nov. 14
Tehran Times Political Desk

TEHRAN – Interior Minister Ali Kordan will face impeachment over his fake degree on November 14, a member of the Majlis presiding board announced on Sunday.

Hamidreza Hajbabaii said during the impeachment session the MPs will be given two hours to cite their reasons for impeachment and the interior minister and the president will have three hours to defend.

The impeachment was filed just after Kordan succeeded to receive 169 votes in favor, 64 against and 36 abstentions on August 5.

Kordan had claimed that he held an honorary PhD from Oxford University. However, after a probe by the Majlis research committee it was revealed that his degree was bogus.

MPs finally decided to impeach the interior minister after he refused to resign voluntarily as demanded by certain MPs in the conservative camp.

Majlis Deputy Speaker Mohammad Hassan Aboutorabi told reporters that since efforts failed to convince the interior minister to resign the Majlis decided to put his impeachment on the agenda.

Meanwhile reformist MP Mohammadreza Tabesh said the Majlis minority faction has so far made no judgment on the Kordan issue and from now on it also has no intention to enter into the inter-group conflicts within the conservative faction which holds the majority in the parliament.

However, he said, “My recommendation to Kordan is that he should respect to public opinion and resign.”

Tabesh said he thinks Kordan will not survive the impeachment bid.
