Tehran Times Political Desk

TEHRAN – Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim suggested that Tehran and Brasilia can upgrade their ties beyond commercial exchanges to include scientific, industrial, technological and cultural cooperation as well.

Amorim made these remarks in a meeting with Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on Saturday.

He said Iran is gifted with an old and rich civilization which should be introduced to the Brazilian people.

The top diplomat also said his country considers developing ties with Iran as a “foreign policy priority.”

Amorim also said Brazil-Iran joint economic commission will provide the ground for an expansion of relations in many areas.

“The meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries is the beginning of a reform in bilateral ties” which can set the stage for a wider cooperation and a meeting between the presidents of the two countries, Amorim noted.

Mottaki also said Iran and Brazil share many common views on international issues.

He said Iran prioritizes relations with Latin American countries in general and Brazil in particular.

“In this region Brazil has a special place in Iran’s foreign policy,” Mottaki explained.

Brazil is the largest and most populous country in South America. It is the fifth largest country by geographical area and the fifth most populous country in the world. Brazil is the only Portuguese-speaking nation in the Americas. Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Brazil has a coastline of over 7,491 kilometers. It is bordered on the north by Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana and the overseas department of French Guiana; on the northwest by Colombia; on the west by Bolivia and Peru; on the southwest by Argentina and Paraguay and on the south by Uruguay. Numerous archipelagos in the Atlantic Ocean are part of the Brazilian territory, such as Fernando de Noronha, Rocas Atoll, Saint Peter and Paul Rocks, and Trindade and Martim Vaz
