IFF to sign long-term contract with Ghotbi
Tehran Times Sports Desk
TEHRAN - Iran Football Federation (IFF) is going to sign a long-term contract with Afshin Ghotbi, whose team failed to book a berth in the 2010 FIFA world Cup.
Iran was held to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday against South Korea in Seoul. Saudi Arabia and North Korea finished in a goalless tie in Riyadh on the same day. As a result, Iran failed to qualify for the World Cup.
Meanwhile, IFF officials are set to extend Ghotbi’s contract, and it’s said they have requested a four-year plan from the American-Iranian coach who could earn a cash prize of $500,000 if Iran advanced to the World Cup.
“Ghotbi can help Iran’s football. We analyzed our team’s performance in the last three matches and found out this coach is able to help us,” IFF vice president Mehdi Taj said.
The 45 old-year coach, who inspired Persepolis football club to win Iran’s Professional league title after six years, took charge of the country’s national team from Ali Daei in April
