Qeshm to host ECO representatives

BANDAR ABBAS – The July meeting of the ambassadors and representatives of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) member countries will be held in Iran’s Qeshm Free Zone on July 13.

Some 30 representative from the ECO members will attend the meeting which is held regularly on a monthly basis, the Mehr News Agency reported.

ECO Secretary General Khurshid Anwar will also take part in the event.

Investment opportunities in Qeshm Island are on the meeting’s agenda.

The Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) is an intergovernmental regional organization established in 1985 by Iran, Pakistan and Turkey for the purpose of promoting economic, technical and cultural cooperation among the member states. It provides a platform to discuss ways to improve development and promote trade, and investment opportunities.

In 1992 ECO expanded to include seven new members, namely Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

The common objective of the organization is to establish a single market for goods and services, much like the European Union. ECO’s secretariat and cultural department are located in Tehran, its economic bureau is in Turkey and its scientific bureau is situated in Pakistan
