Russia’s MegaFone to be operative in Iran: report

MegaFon, Russia’s third largest mobile telecom operator has reportedly been given the license to build a GSM network in Iran.

A report says that following negotiations with the Iranian officials, the Russian firm which is struggling through the global financial meltdown, was given a license to open a branch in Tehran.

Tabnak website said on Friday that MegaFon will be operative in Iran.

Earlier, MegaFon’s General Director Sergei Soldatenkov, had said the firm was ready to invest $4.65 billion in the construction of a network in Iran if it got the license.

There are currently two mobile service providers in Iran, the state-controlled Iran Telecommunication Company and the MTN Group which is sub-Saharan Africa’s biggest cell phone operator.

MegaFon gained a reputation as a serious player in the market when it launched a network on the Black Sea coast in the summer of 2001.
