Tehran Times Culture Desk

TEHRAN -- Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) members will attend the Noruz celebrations in mid March in Iran.

Iran has proposed the holding of the celebration during the meeting of tourism ministers of ECO, which was held on Friday in Antalya, Turkey.

A representative from the Iran Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Organization, deputy Seyyed Reza Musavi, attended the event.

Iran and the countries that proposed the registration of Noruz to UNESCO could benefit from this opportunity to introduce the event to other nations, Musavi mentioned.

Noruz, the ancient celebration of the Iranian New Year that begins on the first day of spring, has recently been registered on UNESCO’s List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Iran, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, and Kyrgyzstan submitted their proposals to UNESCO for registration.

A handicraft exhibition by ECO members will be held on the sidelines of the celebration to introduce their tourist attractions to visitors, he added.

Iran also proposed the inauguration of an international satellite TV channel about tourism to boost this industry, he remarked.

The next edition of the meeting will be held in Tehran next June which will be a great opportunity to introduce Iranian attractions, he remarked.

ECO is the successor organization of Regional Cooperation for Development (RCD) that existed from 1964 to 1979.

In 1992, ECO was expanded to include seven new members, namely: Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Republic of Azerbaijan, Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Republic of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Republic of Uzbekistan.
