Infant deaths prompt stork craft to recall 2.1m cribs

The deaths of four U.S. infants spurred the recall of 2.1 million cribs made by Stork Craft Manufacturing Inc. of Canada, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

Parents and caregivers should stop using the cribs and “find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby,” the CPSC said in a statement yesterday.

The recall is the largest involving cribs by the consumer protection agency. The cribs were sold since 1993 by retailers including Wal-Mart Stores Inc., BJ’s Wholesale Club Inc. and online at Babiesrus.com. Some were sold under the Fisher-Price brand, the CPSC said.

Stork Craft is based in British Columbia, and the cribs were made in China, Canada and Indonesia. The recall includes 968,000 cribs sold in Canada. The company couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

Companies have recalled more than 5 million cribs, bassinets and play yards in the past two years, as the products posed suffocation risks and other dangers to babies, according to the CPSC.

The agency said that the cribs’ plastic hardware can break or deform or the side of the crib that drops down can be installed upside-down, creating a space between the side and the mattress where infants can be entrapped, the agency said.
