Kiarostami to judge UN video festival on migration
Tehran Times Art Desk
TEHRAN -- Acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami and program director of the New York Film Festival Richard Peña are among the jury members of PLURAL + A Youth-Produced Video Festival on migration and diversity.
The international jury composed of filmmakers, youthful representatives and film critics will announce the winners in New York on December 18, coinciding with International Migrants Day.
The festival is a joint initiative of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Over 150 short videos from 36 countries have been submitted to the festival by young people (ages 9 to 25) featuring their thoughts, experiences, opinions, and questions on migration-related themes and on the challenges of ensuring respect and understanding among various communities.
PLURAL + aims to empower young people to speak about what they think of migration and diversity. Their productions center on the themes of migration, diversity, and identity.
The winning video-makers will be awarded with a range of exciting prizes and receive professional opportunities in addition to international exposure through film festivals, conferences, broadcasts, satellite, and internet.
Kiarostami will head the jury of the 9th Marrakech International Film Festival to be held from December 4 to 12.
Kiarostami won the Palme d’Or at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival for “Taste of Cherry”.
