Arab League condemns Israeli settlement expansion in East Beit-ul-Moqaddas

CAIRO (Xinhua) -- The Cairo-based Arab League (AL) Saturday condemned Israel's new settlement construction plans in East Beit-ul-Moqaddas, which were announced in succession this week.

“The Israeli scheme is a clear escalation of the Zionist state's settlement policies in al-Quds (East Jerusalem),” AL Secretary General Amr Moussa said in a statement.

“The Israeli plans threaten efforts exerted to revive the peace process in the Middle East region,” the AL head added.

The Beit-ul-Moqaddas planning and building committee approved this week plans for the construction of four new Jewish residential buildings and a new Jewish community in the city's eastern neighborhood.

Jewish neighborhoods in East Beit-ul-Moqaddas, captured by Israel in 1967 and later annexed, are considered by international community as Israeli settlements and one of the main obstacles to Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a 10-month freeze on construction in the West Bank settlements in November. However, he stressed that the construction limits will not be implemented in predominantly Arab East Beit-ul-Moqaddas.

Israel deems Beit-ul-Moqaddas as its indivisible capital, while the Palestinians want the east section of the holy city as capital of their future state.

The Palestinians have vowed that they will not return to the negotiating table unless Israel totally freezes its construction activities of Jewish settlements in the West Bank as well as in East Beit-ul-Moqaddas.
