Cannes 2015 picks Iran’s “Nahid” for Un Certain Regard

TEHRAN – Iranian social drama, “Nahid” by Iranian filmmaker Aida Panahandeh has been selected for the Un Certain Regard section of the 68th Cannes International Film Festival (May 13-24), the organizers have announced on the festival website.


Nahid, the main character of the story has failed in her first marriage and is unable to express her love for the second time due to the social conditions.

A production of Iran’s Documentary and Experimental Film Center (DEFC), the film is produced by Bijan Emkanian and stars Sareh Bayat, Pejman Bazeghi and Purya Rahimi Sam.

Other movies of the Un Certain include “Fly Away Solo” by Neeraj Ghaywan (India), “The Treasure” by Corneliu Porumboiu (Romania), “Rams” by Grimar Hakonarson (Iceland) and “The Shameless” by Oh Seung-euk (South Korea).

Ingrid Bergman’s daughter Isabella Rossellini is presiding over the jury in the Un Certain Regard.

Cannes Film Festival chief Thierry Fremaux finally unveiled the line-up for this year’s event on Thursday.

He unveiled 42 films, out of which 16 will be competing for the Palme d’Or, and which he said represents “about 90 percent” of the selection that will be completed early next week.

Emmanuelle Bercot’s Standing Tall (La Tete Haute) will be the opening film on May 13.

Other movies at the competition section include “Dheepan” (Jacques Audiard), “A Simple Man” (Stéphane Brizé), “Marguerite and Julien” (Valérie Donzelli), “The Tale of Tales” (Matteo Garrone), “Carol” (Todd Haynes) and “The Assassin” (HOU Hsiao Hsien).

In the Out Of Competition, the movies are “Standing Tall” (Emmanuelle Bercot), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (George Miller), “Irrational Man” (Woody Allen), “Inside Out” (Pete Docter and Ronaldo Del Carmen) and “The Little Prince” (Mark Osborne).

The 68th edition of the festival, presided by Joel and Ethan Coen, will pay tribute to Ingrid Bergman, who would have turned 100 this year.
