TEHRAN - Head of the Environment Committee of Tehran City Council says phenol compounds have been found in Tehran’s municipal water.

Mohammad Haqqani said that he is in receipt of reports from the Department of Environment indicating that the tap water in Tehran is contaminated with phenol, ISNA reported on Saturday.

Phenol is a compound that is used in water treatment. It creates health problems for humans.

Haqani said that he cannot yet confirm 100 percent that the city water contains phenol compounds, but added that the reports cast doubt on the wholesomeness of the water.

Since long ago there have also been reports that Tehran’s city water contains nitrate.
