c_330_235_16777215_0___images_stories_edim_01_arbeen.jpgMillions of Shia Muslims from across the world are walking toward Iraq’s holy shrine city of Karbala to hold mourning rituals on Arbaeen, which is the 40th day after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS).

The marchers are reciting elegies in memory of Imam Hussein (AS) and his 72 loyal companions, who were martyred by the forces of the despotic Umayyad caliph Yazid in the year 61 AH (680 CE) in Karbala.

Arbaeen occurs on Thursday this year according to the Islamic lunar calendar, but ceremonies will also be held on Wednesday night.

Iraq’s military and police forces have tightened security for the event, and thousands of security forces have been deployed to secure roads in the area.

The local government of Karbala has announced that security preparations were made several days ago to prevent any terrorist attacks.
