“In our future deliberations, we will try to avoid any measures that focus on military intervention and the isolation of the parties concerned,” said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a press conference in the Turkish city of Istanbul on Wednesday.
“We will focus on establishing a dialogue platform with the participation of all parties involved,” Lavrov added.
The Russian diplomat further criticized the approach adopted by the so-called Friends of Syria group toward the Syrian issue, saying the process will have a ‘negative’ impact on decisions in Geneva that support a peaceful resolution of the crisis.
Lavrov made the comments ahead of the group’s upcoming meeting, which is scheduled to be held in Turkish city of Istanbul on April 20. US Secretary of State John Kerry will also take part in the event.
“Right now we see this process is making a negative contribution to the (Geneva) decisions,” Lavrov added, referring to an agreement signed in Geneva last year.
The Russian minister noted, “When one party is isolated in any mechanism set up to deal with a conflict, we miss the ground for dialogue.”
The United States, Britain, Germany, France, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar are the leading members of the so-called Friends of Syria group.
Many people, including large numbers of security personnel, have lost their lives in the foreign-backed unrest that erupted in Syria in March 2011.
