The airlines of El Al, Arkia and Israir stopped departing flights at 5:00 a.m. local time on Sunday.

Ofer Eini, the head of the Histadrut labor union, warned that the plan would lead to mass layoffs in domestic airlines.

Eini added that the airlines will lose competition with international carriers due to the capacity of their fleets and high security costs.

“The way in which (this deal) is being implemented will on the one hand bring a reduction in airfares but it will also cause Israeli companies to collapse,” Eini told Israel Radio.

Israeli Transport Minister Yisrael Katz said the proposal was likely to be approved and said it was beneficial for the regime’s ailing economy.

Supporters of the plan say it would lower ticket prices and boost tourism industry.

Israel has experienced several strikes and protests over weak economy, low wages and deteriorating living conditions.
