|Militants kill top Syrian intelligence officer||
Foreign-backed militants have killed a top intelligence officer in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor, Syrian state media has announced.
“Major General Jamaa Jamaa was martyred while carrying out his national duties to defend Syria and its people and pursuing terrorists in Deir Ezzor,” state television said in a breaking news alert on Thursday, AFP reported.
Jamaa was head of military intelligence in the province, where Syrian troops have been battling militants seeking to topple the government of President Bashar al-Assad.
There were no immediate reports on where in the province Jamaa was killed or how he was killed.
Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies, especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and a total of 7.8 million others displaced due to the violence.
