TEHRAN - The Solidarity Party (SP) Central Council elected Mohammad-Reza Rah-Chamani as the party’s Central Council chairman with a majority of votes during a meeting here on Friday.

Karim Malek-Asa and Manuchehr Behnia were chosen as the first and second deputy chairmen respectively.

Ali-Asghar Ahmadi was elected SP secretary general with a majority of votes.

Rah-Chamani is an SP founding member and was its first secretary general from 1998 to 2002. He previously served as an MP for four terms and as the director of the State Welfare Organization.

Ahmadi is also a founding member of the SP and has served as a governor and an MP. He is currently the deputy interior minister for economic and international affairs.

The Solidarity Party is Iran’s oldest moderate reformist group. It was founded in 1997 by a group of MPs and administrative managers. The party established the Hambastegi newspaper in 2000. Moderation in social and political actions and opposition to any kind of monopolization are some of the main stances of the SP.
