Annapolis Conference is doomed to failure: Leader

November 27, 2007

TEHRAN - Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said here on Monday that the Annapolis Conference is doomed to failure.

About 8 million Basij forces in 30,000 locations across the country participated in the Epic of Resistance military parade on Monday.
The Supreme Leader joined the national gathering in Tehran and delivered a speech which was simultaneously broadcast to Basijis across the country.
The Basij forces’ thirst for spirituality is quenched by the teachings of Islam and Islamic morality, he said.
“The Basij is a totally religious association which relies on faith in God and spirituality,” Ayatollah Khamenei observed.
Ever since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979, the enemies of the Islamic Republic have put political, military, and economic pressure on Iran, he added.
Ayatollah Khamenei also praised the Founder of the Islamic Republic, the late Imam Khomeini, for his steadfastness during times of trouble.
“The Imam never gave in to the pressure, and the Basij will never give in to the pressure, unfair laws, and propaganda either. They will never retreat even one step,” the Leader asserted.
He stated that in the eight years of the Sacred Defense (1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war) against the Iraqi Baath regime, “The Basij brought much glory to the country, and in the future, if Iran needs military force, the Basijis will stand on the front line to defend the country.”
“All the major powers supported Saddam Hussein’s forces, which launched the aggression, but the devout Basiji youth of Iran devised and implemented the most complicated tactics in that difficult and unequal war and performed miracles such as the Fat’h-ul-Mobin and Beit-ul-Moqaddas operations.”
The Leader added, “The Basij, like the Islamic Revolution, is a gift from God… and just like the Islamic Revolution, the Basij is an unprecedented phenomenon.”
“Although all countries enjoy the spirit of resistance, the nature of Iran’s Basij is totally different than that of (the resistance forces of) other countries, and that is why the Basij is a unique association.”
The Leader also predicted that the U.S.-hosted Annapolis Conference would be a failure.
“The autumn conference, as all say and as is clear from its name, will fade like autumn and fail. However, the Americans are trying to lead it somewhere in order to compensate for some of the failures of the illegitimate usurper Zionist regime.
“Of course, the Palestinian nation’s vigilance, which has been intertwined with the vigilance of the Islamic ummah, and especially the great Iranian nation, will prevent the U.S. administration from realizing its evil intensions at the conference.”
Upon the arrival of the Supreme Leader, the national anthem of the Islamic Republic of Iran was played. Ayatollah Khamenei also reviewed a guard of honor made up of members of the Ashura and al-Zahra battalions
