ECO names new secretary general

TEHRAN – Afghanistan’s Ambassador to Iran, Mohammad Yahya Maroufi, was appointed as the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) secretary general.

The decision was made as the ECO heads of state met in Tehran on Wednesday.
The Tehran summit was attended by Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Turkish President Abdullah Gul, along with leaders of other members such as Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
Qatari emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and Syrian Vice President Faruq al-Shara also attended as honorary guests
