July 29, 2009

TEHRAN – The Kahrizak detention center has been closed on the orders of Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

The detention center, located in the south of Tehran, was closed because it was below standards, MP Kazem Jalali said on Tuesday.
Jalali stated that soon after the Leader was informed about the matter, he ordered the closure of the detention center.
Members of a special parliamentary committee tasked with examining the post-election unrest detentions inspected Evin prison on Tuesday and met some ordinary prisoners.
“In this visit, we only met ordinary prisoners, not… political figures,” Jalali, who is the spokesman of the special parliamentary committee, told the Mehr News Agency.
He said the detainees arrested in the post-election unrest have made certain requests, adding that meetings with detainees will take place in the coming days.
The special parliamentary committee is chaired by MP Parviz Sorouri, and the members are from the parliament’s security, judicial, and education committees
