China’s Xi says Iran nuclear deal is a source inspiration to settle hot issues
Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Friday that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal, has provided inspiration for settlement of other hot issues.
“We should stick to the political commitment and make sure the deal is implemented as it should have been,” CriEnglish quoted him as saying during a nuclear security summit in Washington attended by leaders of six countries which helped broker the Iranian nuclear deal.
He called the JCPOA a “milestone,” and called for full implementation of the nuclear deal which downsizes Tehran’s nuclear program in return for Western sanctions relief.
He added that any “external interference” should be eliminated.
“We stand ready to work with all related sides to push forward the implementation of the deal,” he said.
He also stressed the importance of strengthening the global security governance in today’s world where hot issues keep emerging.
The Chinese president said that dialogue and negotiation should be the best choice in solution of hotspot issues and cooperation and coordination among major countries proves effective to settle serious disputes.
“Moreover, justice and equity should be the underlying principle for reaching any international agreement,” he said. “The double standard will not lead anywhere.”
Xi also said that political resolve is the key factor for breakthrough in negotiations.
The July 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and the major powers (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany) went into effect in January 16.
China, a negotiating partner, played a key role in bringing the ideas of Iran and the major powers together in concluding the landmark nuclear accord.
International Atomic Energy Agency chief Yukiya Amano also told the nuclear security summit on Friday that Iran has complied with its commitments under the JCPOA.
