TEHRAN – Late Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami’s new experimental work “24 Frames” has been selected to appear as a special screening in the 70th Anniversary Events of the Cannes Film Festival, the organizers announced on Thursday.

Kiarostami completed “24 Frames” months before his death in July 2016. 

“It began with musings on epochal paintings and evolved with the photographs I had taken over the years,” said Kiarostami who won Cannes Palme d’Or for “Taste of Cherry” in 1997.

“Each of these frames is in essence 4 minutes and 30 seconds of what I imagine to have transpired before and after a single image,” he added.

“Twin Peaks” by David Lynch, “Come Swim” by Kristen Stewart and “Top of the Lake: China Girl” by Jane Campion and Ariel Kleiman will be screened in this category.

This year, Cannes will also screen “Dregs” by Iranian director Mohammad Rasulof in the Un Certain Regard category.

In addition, “Lunch Time” by Alireza Qasemi and “Animal” by Bahman Ark, both from Iran, have been selected for the short films and Cinéfondation competitions respectively.

Eighteen films will compete for the Palme d’Or at the 70th Cannes Film Festival, which will be held in the French town from May 17 to 28.
