Larijani to Guardian Council: Law does not bar minorities from councils

April 20, 2017 - 11:43

TEHRAN – The Majlis on Wednesday put a brake on the Guardian Council’s attempt to bar religious minorities from running council seats in constituencies where Muslims are in great majority.

Guardian Council secretary Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati had published an announcement in Wednesday newspapers saying the religious scholars in the 12-member Guardian Council had voted to bar minorities from the councils.

Majlis speaker Ali Larijani, however, corresponded with the council election monitoring headquarters saying they do as the law says: include minorities. He pointed out that any amendment to the law would require an approval by the Majlis.
