Bright future for Iran volleyball

April 23, 2017 - 19:54

Iran volleyball have leapfrogged the Asian teams in recent years thank to talented players in the country who have been encouraged to take the sport.

Big stars, namely Amir Ghaffour, Shahram Mahmoudi, Saeid Marouf, Mohammad Mousavi and Farhad Zarif have played a leading role in the eye-catching growth since they are role models for the youth players who want to start the sport.

Iran volleyball recovered lost glory in 2008 AVC Cup in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand after winning the title.

Under leadership of late Hossein Madani, the Iranian team defeated Asian giants Japan and South Korea to start a glorious era for the coming years.

Argentina’s legendary coach Julio Velasco cemented Iran’s position in the continent and made Team Melli a new Giant in the world.

Velasco helped Iran win Asian Championship in 2011 and 2013 respectively and the Persians came fourth in the 2013 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Grand Champions Cup in Japan.

Finally, Iranian team made history, achieving first-ever Olympic qualification and came fifth in the prestigious event.

Investing in young children is not only the right thing to do from an ethical point of view, but it is also the smart thing to do for the future.

In early April, seven-time champion Iran finished in fourth place in the 11th Asian Boys’ U-19 Volleyball Championship but talent scout Alireza Khoshroei, who has worked as a coach in Iran youth team, says that the team’s performance in Myanmar was satisfying.

“We failed to win the title for the eighth time but booked a berth in the 2017 FIVB Boys’ U-19 World Championship. Iran took part in the event with a very young and inexperienced team. But I hope the situation can significantly improve so that young people can devote themselves fully to sports,” Khoshroei told Tehran Times.

“We will try to find new young players who could continue the success that we’ve achieved so far. That is one of our main goals,” he added.

Igor Kolakovic has replace Raul Lozano after the 2016 Olympic Games.

Khoshroei says it takes time to find out that the Serbian coach is a good replacement for Argentine or not.

"Let's just wait and see what happens," he said.
