December 23, 2017

TEHRAN – Iran handball national team coach Borut Macek says they are going to advance to the 2018 Asian Men's Handball Championship next stage.

Iran have been drawn in Group A along with Iraq and Japan in the competition and kick off the event with a match against Iraq on January 19.

“As I’ve always said I love Iran. I have returned to the team since I like to work in Iran national team. It doesn’t matter if I will be in charge just for three or four matches,” Macek said.

“I think Iran have potential to advance to the Asian championship next stage, however Iraq have improved in recent years and it makes the group difficult,” the Slovenian coach added.

“Iran will play two friendlies with Slovenia ahead of the Asian Handball Championship and we will likely play Algeria in our training camp in Slovenia as well,” he stated.

“Iran are among the Asian top five teams and we are going to advance to the next stage. We need good preparation since the competition will gather the best Asian teams together,” Macek concluded.

‌The 2018 Asian Men's Handball Championship will be the 18th edition of the championship held under the aegis of Asian Handball Federation.

The championship will be hosted at Suwon, South Korea from January 18 to 28, 2018.

It acts as the Asian qualifying tournament for the 2019 World Men's Handball Championship. For the first time, Australia, New Zealand and Bangladesh will participate.
