FIBA U16 Asia Championship: Iran beat Chinese Taipei

Iran recovered from a sluggish start to turn back a determined Chinese Taipei, 93-84 and top Group C at the FIBA U16 Asia Championship on Wednesday.

Matin Aghajanpour exploded for a jaw-dropping 39 points to carry Iran's cause in this pivotal encounter.

He shot 15-of-28 from the field, including hitting thrice from deep. Aghajanpour also grabbed 10 rebounds and had 3 steals. His point total is tied for third-highest in the competition's history, fiba.basketball reported.

The win propels Iran straight into the Quarter-Finals on Day 5, while the Taipei quintet have to play Thursday in the Play-Offs for another shot at getting their own Quarter-Finals berth.

Iran started the competition on a high note, defeating Macau 148-45 on Tuesday.

The 2018 FIBA U16 Asian Championship is the qualifying tournament for FIBA Asia at the 2018 FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup.

The tournament is being held in Foshan, China from 2 to 8 April 2018.

The top four teams will represent FIBA Asia to the 2018 FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup.

The FIBA Asia U16 Championship is an under-16 basketball championship in the International Basketball Federation's FIBA Asia zone.

The event started in 2009 and is held bi-annually. The top placed teams compete in the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup, which started in 2010.
