TEHRAN – The Interior Ministry issued a statement on Thursday announcing a plan to separate some districts from Kazeroun and merge them into a new town has been put on hold.

Kazeroun is in the west of Fars province.

The proposed plan has been currently stopped for a further study, the Interior Ministry said.

The plan by the local administration to delegate the authority of the ancient site of Bishapur and a few other landmarks from Kazeroun to the newly planned town of Kouhchenar sparked unrest by a group of locals.

The ancient site of Bishapur was founded during the Sassanid era in 266 AD.

The protests to the move started over the last few days. According to the governor of Fars province, one person was killed in the unrest. The governor also asked people not to pay attention of rumors propagated by social media.

The Interior Ministry also called on the local people to keep calm and be aware of the anti-revolutionary elements who seek to use the issue as a pretext to undermine security.

According to Press TV, the plan was proposed by a lawmaker representing the city in the parliament in November 2017.
