Iran has repeatedly declared that terrorism is a phenomenon that should be dealt with in a global framework. In other words, it is only through international cooperation that we can hope to eradicate terrorism. Naturally, terrorist activities cannot be divided into good and evil but, unfortunately, in some Western countries, the phenomenon is associated with Islam and Muslims, which is aimed at creating a false impression about Islam. Western countries must realize that any direct or indirect support of terrorism will finally result in a great crisis for all countries including Western powers. Highlighting the issue of religious extremism in the Muslim world by Western governments has actually caused them to forget about their own domestic issues, and they have neglected to pay enough attention to domestic extremist groups. The recent terrorist incident in Norway clearly indicates that all nations should pay special attention to the dangers of extremism in any form. This can significantly raise the level of stability and security in today's world. Due to the heavy consequences of terrorist acts, Western countries should stop supporting groups associated with this phenomenon, although they wrongly believe that terrorism is sometimes a good tool for protecting their interests. Many believe that the real solutions to create a more stabilized and secure world is to feel committed to the collective international wisdom. The recent conference on the Global War on Terrorism, which was held in Tehran, was in fact a symbol of such an effort. By inviting many intellectuals from different parts of the world, the Islamic Republic of Iran showed its serious willingness to propose better solutions to fight against terrorism. Therefore, the collective solutions produced by different states can be more effective in the Global War on Terrorism. Terrorism must be eradicated as soon as possible. We hope for a better future in which there is no room for violence and terrorism and the innocent lives of our citizens are properly protected. *Ramin Mehmanparast is the spokesman of the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
