TEHRAN – An informed source at the Iranian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday dismissed the remarks recently attributed to Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast in regard to relations with the United Arab Emirates.
Mehmanparast was quoted by a number of Iranian and foreign media outlets as saying that Iran will decide to downgrade or even cut its relations with the UAE if it continues to claim sovereignty over the three Persian Gulf islands of Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs.
In addition, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hassan Qashqavi said in Dubai on Tuesday that relations between Tehran and Abu Dhabi are developing.
Qashqavi had traveled to Dubai to attend a meeting of the Iran-UAE joint consular committee.
He stated, “The countries in the southern shores of the Persian Gulf are our neighbors and friends, and, according to Islamic teachings, we should maintain developing and good relations with our neighbors.”
Qashqavi also held a meeting with UAE Deputy Foreign Minister Tariq Ahmed al-Haidan in Dubai on Wednesday, during which the UAE official stated that ties between the two countries are based on the principle of good neighborliness.
