TEHRAN – Lakhdar Brahimi, the new UN-Arab League joint special envoy on Syria, is scheduled to arrive in Tehran today to hold talks with Iranian officials about the situation in Syria, Iranian media outlets reported on Saturday.

It will be Brahimi’s first trip to Iran in his capacity as an envoy on Syria.

Brahimi will hold meetings with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Saeed Jalili, and a number of other senior officials.

Brahimi’s predecessor, Kofi Annan, visited Tehran on July 9 and 10.

During a joint press conference with Salehi on July 10, Annan, who formerly served as the United Nations secretary general, said, “My presence here proves that I believe Iran can play a positive role and should therefore be a part of the solution (to) the Syrian crisis.”
