TEHRAN – The first meeting of a joint committee established by representatives of the Syrian government and opposition groups was held in Damascus on Sunday, according to Iran’s charge d’affaires to Syria.
In an interview with the Persian service of the Mehr News Agency published on Monday, Abbas Golru said that 30 members of the committee attended the meeting.
“After the Syrian national dialogue meeting in Tehran, which was held according to our country’s initiative with the participation of Syrian political and religious figures, a statement was issued… in which both Syrian sides agreed to establish a committee to follow up national dialogue in Syria, and it was agreed that the committee pursue its task in Damascus,” Golru stated.
He was referring to the meeting that was held on the theme of “No to Violence, Yes to Democracy” in the Iranian capital on November 18 and 19. About 200 Syrian citizens, including religious leaders, party leaders, political figures, tribal chiefs, and representatives of Syrian opposition groups, as well as representatives from Turkey, Egypt, Iraq, and a number of other countries, had attended the meeting.
The Iranian charge d’affaires added, “Members of the Syrian national dialogue follow-up committee regarded participants of the Tehran meeting as true representatives of the Syrian people and criticized foreign efforts to portray a certain group of the opposition as sole representative of the Syrian people.”
“In the meeting of the follow-up committee in Damascus, the mechanism to follow up the holding of national dialogue was discussed and it was agreed that a committee be established which is tasked with developing plans and determining general policies and objectives of the follow-up committee,” Golru explained.
He also stated that in the meeting in Damascus, a number of proposals were made regarding the establishment of specialized subcommittees with the aim of utilizing participants’ potential and the general outlines of the proposals were approved.
It was agreed in the Syrian capital that the next meeting of the committee be held in the near future, the Iranian diplomat added.
