TEHRAN – A number of MPs are seeking to impeach Cooperatives, Labor, and Social Welfare Minister Abdolreza Sheikholeslami over his failure to remove former Tehran prosecutor general Saeed Mortazavi from his post as the director of the Social Security Organization.
The Court of Administrative Justice announced on January 14 that the decree issued in mid-March 2012 in which Mortazavi had been appointed as the director of the Social Security Organization had been revoked.
Some MPs hold Mortazavi partly responsible for the Kahrizak incident, in which three inmates lost their lives.
On Monday, Sheikholeslami, during a meeting with the MPs seeking to impeach him, promised to remove Mortazavi from his post by Tuesday.
However, it was announced on Tuesday that First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi had appointed Mortazavi as the caretaker of the Social Security Organization.
In the impeachment motion, which has 12 signatures on it and was released on Tuesday, the MPs have stated Sheikholeslami’s disregard for the law as the main reason for their decision to impeach him.
The lawmakers who have signed the motion are Ali Motahhari, Evaz Heidarpour, Morad Hashem-Zehi, Ahmad Tavakkoli, Gholam Reza Taj-Gardoon, Elyas Naderan, Gholam Reza Nouri, Behrouz Nemati, Hossein Dehdashti, Gholam Reza Mesbahi-Moqaddam, Abdolkarim Hosseinzadeh, and Massoud Pezeshkian.
MP Ali Motahhari told reporters on Tuesday that the receipt of the motion by the Majlis Presiding Board will be pursued on Wednesday.
