Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi attended the inauguration ceremony and briefed reporters on the features of the mobile Ya Zahra air defense system, saying, “The weapon has the capability to identify, track, and destroy aerial targets, such as various types of aircraft, helicopters, and UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) within a short range.”
“The system can be deployed anywhere and carry out its mission effectively,” he added.
Vahidi also said that the missile system can engage multiple targets and destroy them quickly at the same time and is capable of detecting targets automatically.
On the features of the domestically manufactured Mersad missile system, he said, “The Mersad surface-to-air missile system is a medium-range advanced and efficient air defense system which can carry out defense operations against various types of fast aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, and cruise missiles.”
The Mersad system is capable of carrying out missions at day and night and has been designed in such a way that it can counter electronic warfare measures successfully, Vahidi said.
Both missile systems were successfully tested during a joint air defense exercise of the Armed Forces and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, entitled the Defenders of the Sky of Velayat 4, which was conducted in eastern Iran from November 12 to 15 last year.
