|It is time for a diplomatic solution to Iran’s nuclear issue: Obama||
TEHRAN – U.S. President Barack Obama has told Iran it is time to end a standoff over the country’s nuclear program, just two weeks before fresh talks with world powers, AFP reported on Wednesday.
“The leaders of Iran must recognize that now is the time for a diplomatic solution, because a coalition stands united in demanding that they meet their obligations,” Obama said in his State of the Union address.
Iran and the 5+1 group (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany) are scheduled to hold a new round of talks over the country’s nuclear program on February 26 in Kazakhstan.
Iran is engaged in a standoff with the United States and some of its Western allies, who claim Tehran may be trying to develop weapons capability under the cover of a civilian nuclear program.
Iran has repeatedly denied that is its intention, and has met with world powers several times for negotiations but the talks have stalled since a round held last June in Moscow.
