He made the remarks during the inauguration ceremony of new Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Tehran on Saturday, after which he officially started his four-year-long tenure.

Zarif replaced Ali Akbar Salehi on Thursday after the parliament approved all but three of President Hassan Rohani’s 18 cabinet picks, allowing the new government to start work.

Rohani said that any mistake in foreign policy can take a heavy toll on the people, adding that individuals in this field have to think about their words carefully before speaking on foreign policy issues, otherwise the people have to pay a heavy price.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Rohani said that in the June 14 presidential election, people sought a change in Iran’s foreign policy. However, he added, this change means a change in methods and approaches, not a change in principles.

He also noted, “We should show courage to pursue our national interests, and our words should be sensible, to the point, and rational” since foreign policy has no room for slogans.

In addition, the president said that the government is pleased to have Salehi in another post.

In a decree issued on Thursday, Salehi was appointed as director of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran.

Rohani added that the people sent their message to the world through the presidential election and now it is up to the world to carefully listen to this message.

Former foreign ministers Kamal Kharazi and Manouchehr Mottaki also attend the ceremony.
