Zarif described the situation in Egypt as “critical”, saying that international efforts should be made to prevent tensions from escalating and find a peaceful solution to defuse the crisis.

Ban, for his part, briefed the Iranian foreign minister on the measures that the UN has taken so far to help end the violence in the Arab country and resolve the situation peacefully.

He also congratulated Zarif on his appointment as Iran’s new foreign minister and invited new Iranian President Hassan Rohani to attend the 68th session of the UN General Assembly.
