“If such a thing (a chemical attack) is true, it has definitely been carried out by terrorists and takfiri groups that have shown in practice that they do not refrain from any crime,” Zarif said during a telephone conversation with his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu on Wednesday.
“Iran is in talks with the Syrian government to investigate different aspects of the issue,” Zarif said, adding that Iran strongly condemns any use of chemical weapons.
Davutoglu, for his part, voiced concern about the situation in Syria and called for the continuation of consultations between Tehran and Ankara to help defuse the crisis.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also held a telephone conversation with Zarif on Thursday and emphasized that the situation in Syria should be resolved only through peaceful means.
The two officials also discussed bilateral issues and the dispute over Tehran’s nuclear program, which Iran says is entirely peacefully but the West suspect may have military dimensions.
