The top Italian diplomat congratulated Zarif on his appointment as Iran’s foreign minister and wished him success during his tenure.

She also called for expansion of ties between the two countries and asked for increasing consultations on regional and international issues.

In addition she condemned the use of chemical weapons in Syria and said that the United Nations should carry out investigations into the incident.

During the conversation, Zarif said the use of chemical weapons goes against human principles and international law.

He also spoke about claims that the Syrian government conducted last week’s chemical weapon attacks, saying, “We have been in close contact with the Syrian government and they have reassured us that they have never used such inhumane weapons and that it (Syria) will work in full cooperation with UN inspectors to visit the affected areas.”

He also emphasized that the international community should seriously react to the use of chemical weapons by terrorists and should condemn the move.
