Reuters reported on Wednesday that U.S. President Barack Obama had won the backing of key figures in the U.S. Congress, including Republicans, in his call for limited U.S. strikes on Syria over the alleged use of chemical weapons by government forces in a recent attack near Damascus on rebels fighting against the government.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has made and will make every humanitarian effort to help the Syrian people, and has taken and will take the measures necessary to fulfill its commitment to (help maintain) the stability of the region,” Rohani said in a speech during a meeting of the Assembly of Experts in Tehran on Wednesday.

He also said, “Iran is also aware of the problems which will be created for the region by the outbreak of a war and an attack on Syria, so it has taken all political and international measures in recent days (to prevent strikes on Syria) and will continue its efforts.”

“Of course, the Islamic Republic of Iran will meet its religious and humanitarian obligations to send relief aid for the Syrian people if they will be faced with problems,” he said.

“We believe that the main problem in Syria is foreign intervention (which has) prepared the ground for terrorists,” he said.

In addition, he said that every action against Syria not only would be to the detriment of the region but would also harm “the friends of the United States.”

Elsewhere in his remarks, Rohani said that dealing with the country’s economic and foreign policy issues was the main priority of his administration.
