The Leader made the remarks during a meeting with a number of members of the Assembly of Experts in Tehran on Thursday.

“We believe that the Americans are making mistakes in Syria, and for this reason they have felt the impact of the blow dealt to them and will definitely suffer loss,” he said.

Ayatollah Khamenei said that the main objective of the hegemonistic powers was to gain dominance over the region by using the Zionist regime.

“The objective of the recent (commotion) about Syria which has started on the pretext of (the use of) chemical weapons is the same, but the Americans are trying to play with words and employ rhetoric to pretend that they have become involved in this case on humanitarian grounds,” he said.

“The Americans are making claims about humanitarian issues in spite of their past record in the Guantanamo (Bay detention camp) and Abu Ghraib prison, their silence on the use of chemical weapons by Saddam (Hussein) in Halabja and (in attacks on) Iranian cities, and their killing of innocent people in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq,” he stated.

He also said that the developments occurring in the region “are in fact the response of the global arrogance (forces of imperialism), led by the United States, to the Islamic Awakening.”

“The hegemonistic powers’ presence in the region… is meant to break down the resistance against them, but the hegemonistic bloc has not been and will not be able to break this resistance,” he added.

Leader calls President Rohani experienced, revolutionary figure

Elsewhere in his remarks, Ayatollah Khamenei described new Iranian President Hassan Rohani, who is also a member of the Assembly of Experts, as an experienced and revolutionary figure and said that he would support the new administration as he had supported previous administrations.

Prior to Ayatollah Khamenei’s address, Assembly of Experts Chairman Ayatollah Mohammad Reza Mahdavi-Kani delivered a speech in which he underlined the need to help the new administration with its efforts meant to resolve the problems facing the country.

Deputy Assembly of Experts Chairman Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi-Shahroudi also delivered a speech and briefed the Leader on the 14th meeting of the assembly which was held on Tuesday and Wednesday.
