“Israel would be the main target of Syria’s response to the potential attack,” said Allaedin Boroujerdi, who chairs the Iranian National Security and Foreign Policy Committee.

Speaking about his recent trip to Syria in which he met with high-ranking Syrian officials including President Beshar al-Assad, Boroujerdi said, “Syrians were quite sure that the attack would be carried out by the U.S. and allies, and they seemed very determined to give a strong response to such an incursion.”

Referring to Russia’s support for the Syrian government, he said, “Syria is Russia’s only remaining foothold in the Middle East and Moscow will do everything it deems necessary not to let the U.S. dominate the entire region.”

The US Senate will vote on authorizing military intervention in Syria later this week.

The White House has admitted it has no "irrefutable" evidence of Syrian government's use of chemical weapons, but said a "strong common-sense test irrespective of the intelligence" suggested the Syrian army was responsible for the August poison gas attack.
