He made the remarks during a meeting in Tehran with the Japanese ambassador to the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Larijani also criticized UN special rapporteur for human rights in Iran Ahmed Shaheed and said that Shaheed, who is appointed by the U.S., supports terrorist groups.

“The human rights issue has turned into a political pretext in the international scene and is being exploited by the United States and certain (other) Western countries. Therefore the human rights issue has been distanced from its original nature,” Larijani said.

He also called for cooperation between Iran and Japan on human rights.
