Rohani made the remarks during a speech at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on Friday, where high-ranking officials from member and observer states participated.

“The majority of UN member states, including 120 Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) member states have dismissed sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran as illegitimate, illegal, and politically motivated,” Rohani said.

He also said that through political will, mutual respect, and confidence building measures Iran and the West can shortly reach a solution on the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program.

The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons are necessary to ensure international peace and stability, Rohani noted.

He further said that all signatories to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) have inalienable right to a peaceful use of nuclear technology.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Iran has categorically rejected the allegation, saying it is enriching uranium only for medical purposes and fueling nuclear power stations.

Syrian crisis should be resolved through political channels

Elsewhere in his remarks, Rohani spoke about Syria and underlined that the human crisis in the Arab country should be resolved through political channels without any foreign intervention.

He also called on all involved parties to help hold a constructive dialogue between the opposing sides in Syria.

“Iran, as a main victim of chemical weapons, is opposed to the production, stockpiling, and use of such weapons and seeks the eradication of all weapons of mass destruction in the region,” he stated.

Rohani also hailed Russia’s initiative for Syria to relinquish its arsenal of chemical weapons as part of efforts to avert U.S.-led strike against the government of Bashar Al-Assad.

“We believe that arming the extremist and Takfiri groups, particularly with chemical weapons, is the greatest danger to peace and security in the region,” he added.

The world needs to renounce extremism and violence, Rohani said, underlining that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization can be a standard-bearer for such a global movement.
