|Former FM calls Zarif a highly qualified diplomat||
TEHRAN - Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is a qualified diplomat who can take important steps to protect Iran’s nuclear rights in future negotiations with major powers, says Kamal Kharrazi who was foreign minister under the reformist government of Mohammad Khatami.
Kharrazi made the remarks when was asked to express his view about the makeup of Iranian nuclear negotiators.
“The negotiating team is not still formed but I am happy that Mr. Zarif will have a role in negotiations because he is a very capable person and can take steps in realizing the rights of our country in the best way,” Kharrazi told the Mehr News Agency on Saturday.
On whether he is optimistic about the result of nuclear negotiations between Iran and the 5+1 group (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany), he said, “We should be hopeful because our best experts will be involved” in the negotiations.
On how to achieve the desired results in nuclear talks, the former top diplomat said, “Everything is dependent on the resistance of the country and people in realizing their rights.”
The former foreign minister went on to say that Westerners in negotiations just care about their own interests. “There is a clash between the interests of Iran and the Western side and that is why this issue should not be viewed simply.”
Kharrazi was foreign minister from 1997 to 2005. During his tenure as top diplomat the incumbent President Hassan Rohani, who at the time was the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, led Tehran’s nuclear negotiations with the European Union trio of Germany, Britain and France.
Also, Zarif served as Iran’s representative to the United Nations in New York when Kharrazi acted as foreign minister.
