|Rouhani pledges to present ‘true face of Iran’ at UN||
TEHRAN – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Monday he would use his visit to the United Nations to present the “true face of Iran” to the world.
He made the remarks shortly before his five-day trip to New York to attend the annual UN General Assembly meeting.
“Unfortunately in recent years the face of Iran, a great and civilized nation, has been presented in another way,” Rouhani said. “I and my colleagues will take the opportunity to present the true face of Iran as a cultured and peace-loving nation.”
“On this trip, I will try to deliver the voice of the oppressed people of Iran to the world and we should say that sanctions are an illegal and unacceptable path.”
The United States and its allies claim that Iran is seeking to use nuclear capability to build a bomb and have imposed sanctions aimed at stopping it. Iran categorically denies the allegations and says its nuclear energy program is purely peaceful.
Iran and world powers have held several rounds of negotiations which have so far failed to resolve the dispute.
He added that in the recent presidential election the Iranian people demonstrated that they are opposed to extremism and that he will deliver this message to the world.
The people’s opposition to extremism and violence at this critical juncture is very important, Rouhani noted. “We want to declare that the Iranian nation is itself a victim of weapons of mass destruction and is not looking for such weapons.”
He also called on the West to take the path of talks and mutual understanding to achieve reciprocal interests.
On his itinerary during his stay in New York, Rouhani said that he is scheduled to hold meetings with high ranking foreign officials, Iranian expatriates, a number of scholars, and speak to a number of media outlets.
