|Sanctions have made access to medicine difficult and it is a human rights violation, Rouhani tells Dutch ambassador||
TEHRAN – President Hassan Rouhani said on Monday that the Western-led sanctions against Iran have made the Iranian people’s access to medicine difficult and are a violation of human rights.
Rouhani made the remarks as he received the credentials of the new Dutch Ambassador to Tehran Johannes Douma.
The president also said, “We should all be careful that the issue of human rights is not turned into a political issue, and we should bear this in mind that human rights are not fully observed in any country and there are weaknesses (in all countries).”
“However, while we should respect cultural differences we should respect principles such as freedom of expression and exchange of views,” the Iranian president noted.
The president also called for exchange of views between Iranian and Dutch scholars including law experts.
Rouhani expressed hope that during Douma’s tenure in Tehran, the relations between the two countries’ people and officials would expand.
“We hope that we will witness a smooth expansion of relations between Iran and the European Union countries including the Netherlands in areas of economy, culture and politics,” the president said.
The president went on to say that Tehran is determined to resolve its nuclear dispute with the West in a “short time”.
Rouhani added that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Iran has “absolute right” to nuclear technology and is ready to clear up ambiguities about its nuclear program in negotiations with the 5+1 group – the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany.
For his part, Ambassador Douma said his country is willing to strengthen ties with Iran in all spheres, especially economic areas.
In a reference to Iranians who live in the Netherlands, the ambassador said consular cooperation between the two countries is a good start for the development of ties.
The ambassador also expressed delight over Iran’s successes in sports especially Iran’s presence in the World Cup matches and volleyball championship in Asia.
